HOW TO MEASURE COMPRESSION STOCKINGS AND SLEEVES

Measuring for Medical Compression Stockings

Place the measuring board on a stable surface and put the tape measure, ball point pen, and measurement form in a readily accessible location. Have the patient place his or her leg on the measuring board.

Foot length excluding the toes: from the metatarsophalangeal joint to the end of the heel. Foot length including the toes: from the tips of the toes to the end of the heel.

Measure circumference c-A at the metatarsophalangeal joint.

Measure circumference Y around the instep and the heel at maximal dorsal flexion.

Measure circumference c-B and L-B length above the ankle at the narrowest point of the calf.

Measure circumference B1 and length L-B1 above the ankle at the transition between the Achilles tendon and the calf.

Measure circumference C and length L-C at the greatest circumference of the calf.

Measure circumference D and length L-D at the fibular head (two finger-widths below the kneecap).

Picture: 19.28 Measure length L-E to the middle of the popliteal cavity (hollow of the knee) with the leg extended.

Circumference E is the knee circumference measure at the middle of the patella, with the leg slightly bent.

Measure circumference F and length L-F at the middle of the thigh.

Measure circumference G and length L-G at the greatest circumference of thigh with the patient standing.

Compression Tights: For compression tights, take the following measurements as well.

Measure the inseam.

Measure length L-T on the outside as far as the waist, reading directly off the measuring board. The customer determines the waist height herself/himself with her/his hand.

Measure the back of the trunk from the waist over the buttocks to the gluteal fold.

Measure the front of the trunk from the waist to the crotch.

Measure circumference H at the level of the greatest circumference around the hips.

Measure circumference T at the waist.

Stockings with Side-Padding. For stockings with side padding, take the following additional measurements. Measuring point P-1: Measure from the medial malleolus over the Achilles tendon to the lateral malleolus.

Measuring point P-2: measure from the medial malleolus over the sole of the foot to the lateral malleolus.
